Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin and Maserati SUVs may change the face of executive cars as we know them.

OK, so it's a concept. But word on the street is that the Lamborghini SpA Urus concept vehicle could become a real-life production model in 2017.

Rambo Lambo

This, of course, is not Lamborghini's first venture into the world of the SUV; back in the 1980s / early 1990s, the Rambo Lambo was a bit of a cult car. The non-military version came with all sorts of luxury specification including leather, air-con and there was even a premium stereo system was housed in the roof. Oh, and of course, it had plenty of power. 

Although this interesting piece of car history is long departed, Lamborghini have no doubt been tempted back to the sector by the extraordinary rise of the sports utility vehicle and, in particular, the growth in popularity of the prestige marque SUV. 

Not only do SUVs hold - and command - more money than saloon cars (in general), they are a great product to push out to countries where roads may not be as good as the UK and the US.

Lamborghini SUV Unveiled

Interestingly, Lamborghini chose to unveil their concept SpA Urus SUV during a Bejing VW AG event. Given the glitz and glamour that accompanied Jaguar's CX-17 unveiling, it is a little surprising that Lamborghini didn't pull out all the stops and show off their new concept car to the world at a much larger auto show. 

Perhaps they were a little wary after their failure to crack the military market with their Rambo Lambo; perhaps they wanted to the gauge reaction in less of a glaring spotlight. Who knows.

Other Supercar SUVs

When we talk about executive SUVs we usually think of Mercedes, Audi, BMW & perhaps Porsche but as well as Lamborghini, Bentley are getting in on the act. Their offering - a crossover car that will cost around 180k euros - already has 2000 pre-orders and this is without anyone actually seeing the final design. 

These manufacturers all know that this sector is not one to ignore and if anything, they are a little late in jumping on the SUV bandwagon. Rolls-Royce are rumoured to be considering producing an SUV to complement their existing model range, as is Aston Martin. Maserati are planning to join in by bringing their sports utility vehicle to the table in 2015. 

Everyone else is also expanding their range too, BMW already have four SUVs in their line up and the X4 will be launched later this year. And Audi, well, the smaller Q1 is sure to be a big hit with buyers across the globe. Mercedes have (finally) produced a smaller SUV than the ML-Class; the GLA-Class has been long-awaited and it is sure to be a bit hit (especially if leasing prices stack up).

The future of the Supercar SUV

So where do we go from here? Who knows?

All I will say is that when I make my millions I am very pleased to hear that the really posh manufacturers are taking note of the practical car. A Lamborghini, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin or Maserati SUV all sound good to me. 

I'm actually not too fussy, any of them will do.
