£6m investment announcement is more great news for the UK Automotive Industry and also the Midlands
The Midlands have had a very hard time of late;
house prices have previously hit rock bottom and unemployment figures went
through the roof over the course of the past few years. Of course, we are not
alone – the recessionary pinch has been felt across the whole of the UK in one
way or another.
It has taken some time but it seems that we just may
be coming out of what has been the darkest financial period for a very long
time and it seems that the automotive sector are leading the way.
The news that Nissan are set to invest a total of £6
million in Coventry - trusting ADV Manufacturing with the final assembly of
their new London-bound "Black Cab" is more great news for the region
and for the country as a whole.
There will be a brand new building to accommodate
the manufacture of the new taxi that will hit the streets at the tail end of
the year. Interestingly - and true to Nissan form - there will be an EV version
(electric vehicle) to follow in 2015.
Now you have to remember that Nissan are
perfectionists - I have heard it said by a number of people that Nissan don't make bad cars. They have chosen ADV
because of their excellent track record and their ability to meet with Nissan’s
“rigorous manufacturing standards".
As well as the obvious benefits that building the
new centre will bring to the supply chain and the construction industry, it
will also create jobs. In addition, it will be a natural draw for some of the talented
engineering students at Coventry University when it comes to finding both work
experience and real-world careers.
Brendan O’Toole, CEO of ADV Manufacturing, said:
“Coventry University [is] turning out world class engineers and an army of
great workers steeped in automotive manufacturing disciplines [are] right on
our doorstep. We couldn’t be located in a better place to launch such an
exciting and prestigious project as the New Taxi for London."
Let's also not forget that further investment in the
electric vehicle arena is something that is not to be sniffed at; going greener
can only be a good thing and for one, I am proud that Britain is producing some
great electric vehicles right here on our own soil.
