Jaguar C-X17 Move into SUV Territory

Are (even more) exciting times ahead for the best of British?

It has been a little while since we reported on the Jaguar C-X17.
Who can forget the hype that surrounded the Frankfurt Motor Show 2013 (IAA)? The concept Jaguar C-X17 quite literally rocked the show. It was on the basis of such an enthusiastic reaction that Jaguar are now planning to roll out the production model some time in 2015.
Jaguar have reported great sales this year and in September, we reported that their sales were up by 13 percent. It is not surprising given the success of the Evoque (this was up by some 35 percent) and of course, the new Range Rover Sport (which has been dubbed by some as the best 4x4 in the world).
Just when we were about to take a breather and report on some other car-related affairs, up pops the Jaguar C-X17 Sports Crossover Concept Debut at the Dubai Motor Show.
Jaguar took the Dubai stage with the C-X17 and reminded the world of their advanced aluminium monocoque architecture strategy; Jaguar’s new philosophy is set to star across the entire state-of-the-art future of the marque.
 

New Sedan?

It is interesting that the C-X17 is the star of the show when it comes to showing off Jaguar’s new philosophy. We say this because the first car that will feature aluminium monocoque architecture technology is actually a mid-range sedan car.
Personally, we can’t decide if Jaguar will be testing the water with this one before finally launching the long-awaited SUV. The C-X17 will be so eagerly anticipated that Jaguar won’t want to risk any sort of teething problems.
This, however, is only a theory. It may be that Jaguar want to build even more hype ready for the launch of the C-X17; if the sedan is successful (and no doubt it will be) then by the time the C-X17 comes along, sales will soar. Think back to the Evoque launch: these bods know what they’re doing.
 

C-X17 Design in brief

• The Jaguar C-X17 is a sports crossover SUV that really stands out from the crowd
• Low slung and coupe-esque in stature, the C_X17 show model sported 23” wheels and had muscular, yet graceful lines
• The C-X17 Bonnet features two projecting “bulges”; the front grille is also pronounced and inspired by the timeless XJ
• There are four seats inside the C-X17 and the cabin provides a cocoon-like setting
• The boot is spacious and two additional “leisure” seats are stored in the boot (for use when the car is stationary and the rear hatchback is open); these seats provide an area ideal for picnicking, for example
• The interior is given a further sense of space and light with a panoramic sun roof
• Two-tone leather trim: seats, instrument panel, floors, doors and boot are finished in Jet saddle leather and Orchid leather
• Multi-passenger interactivity is provided by Jaguar’s new Interactive Surface Console. This is comprised of a number of connecting touch screens that are covered with­ transparent acrylic glass and connects those in the rear of the vehicle with the driver and front seat passengers via a Wi-Fi network. You can upload pictures and interact with social media via innovative sharing technology
• Expect Meridian brand surround sound with 28 loudspeakers with subwoofer “force cancelling”.

 

Summary

Do we really need another four seater SUV? We’re not too sure here at MM HQ; could the lack of five seats could put some buyers off?
And are the leisure seats in the boot really necessary? Will they make it to the production model or are they destined to stay in the concept? After all, they can only add weight. Assuming that everyone who owns an SUV has an “active” lifestyle is also not likely to be an accurate prediction; perhaps they will be a cost option.
Finally, what about the Interactive Surface Console? Could this be the final nail in the family car coffin – say goodbye to conversation, everyone, the C-X17 is here. Oh and whilst we’re on the subject, don’t worry about concentrating while you’re driving – as long as you’re up to date on Twitter you’re OK.
This may sound a bit scathing but actually, we can’t wait for first deliveries and we do, in fact love it. Off the record, a certain lady may even be putting her name down for one when order books open.
